Subtitled "The Missing Link," the first installment in the 2D fighting game franchise was published for the Sony PlayStation console in 1998. Guilty Gear takes place in the 22nd century, after a bitter war has been fought between humanity and biological weapons, dubbed "Gears." Ten combatants enter an international fighting tournament to determine the fate of the Gears' imprisoned leader.

Music from the game appears on volume 1 of the Guilty Gear Sound Complete Box compilation, streaming on Spotify and Amazon Music Unlimited. Arrangement and keyboards for the soundtrack are by Yasuharu Takanashi, with Shotaro Ohata featured on guitar, and Isamu Takita on bass.

Guilty Gear is currently available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows through Steam. A video interview with Ishiwatari be viewed on the Archipel YouTube channel.
