Arc System Works has published River City: Rival Showdown for modern platforms, first released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016. Aplus Co., Ltd. developed the remake of the celebrated Famicom title to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Kunio-kun game series.

River City Ransom is the third installment in the Kunio-kun franchise, following Renegade and Super Dodge Ball. First released in Japan under the title "Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari," the brawler developed by Technōs Japan arrived on the 8-bit Nintendo Famicom console in 1989, featuring music by Kazuo Sawa.


River City: Rival Showdown is available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows through Steam, featuring tight controls, improved backgrounds, and online play. Showdown comes bundled with "Double Dragon Duel 2023," an additional 2D fighting game.

The Limited Edition physical release for Nintendo Switch ships with the soundtrack on compact disc. The Asia region edition with multiple language options is available through distributor Play-Asia. The digital soundtrack is streaming on Spotify and YouTube Music, courtesy of the publisher.
