During the company's Sonic Central livestream, Sega announced Sonic Origins. Scheduled for launch in 2022, the compilation title will bundle Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD.

Sonic Origins marks the return of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, first published in 1994, which did not make an appearance in the Sega Genesis Mini collectible console. Due to music licensing issues, it is the only Sonic title of the compilation without an accessible digital soundtrack release.

Sonic CD debuted for the Mega-CD home console in 1993 in Japan. Introducing the theme of time warps, Sonic gains the ability to visit the same stages in the past, present and future. To differentiate these locations chronologically, the composers incorporated less advanced, low-fi electronic instruments on stages taking place in the past, harkening back to the more limited specs of the Sega Mega Drive console.

In 2019, London's Data Discs label published the Sonic CD soundtrack to vinyl. The three-disc analog record set, containing the remastered music score from the Japanese edition of the game, ships through PixelCrib in Australia. Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog CD 20th Anniversary Edition digital album is streaming on the Spotify platform, featuring original music by Masafumi Ogata and Naofumi Hataya.

The three-volume Sonic the Hedgehog digital soundtrack, first published in 2007, is streaming on Spotify. Sega commemorated the the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog with the Sonic 1&2 soundtrack album release in October of 2011.
