Director and lead artist George Kamitani began work in 1997 on the concept, a direct sequel to Princess Crown for Sega Saturn in which players explore dungeons and battle dragons. The project did not come to fruition until after production on Muramasa: The Demon Blade was completed. Dragon's Crown was revived as a spiritual successor, incorporating sidescrolling beat-em-up gameplay.
Dragon's Crown Pro launched in 2018. The remaster for PlayStation 4 supports up to 4K resolution, allowing both English and Japanese-language vocal performances available as selectable options. A newly recorded soundtrack was performed by the Synchron Stage Orchestra in Austria, conducted by Johannes Vogel. Orchestration for the soundtrack was contributed by Azusa Chiba, Yoshimi Kudo, Kazuki Higashihara, Rikako Watanabe
Original music is composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto of Basiscape, featuring vocals by Eumyth. Both soundtracks are available through streaming platforms, published by Atlus. Dragon's Crown and Dragon's Crown Pro soundtracks are available for streaming on Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music Unlimited.
