Sam Miller's Donkey Kong Country Trilogy Recreated on Bandcamp

Louisiana-based composer Jammin’ Sam Miller has taken great pains to recreate the soundtracks to Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble using the original equipment utilized by composers David Wise, Eveline Fischer and Robin Beanland.

Each note the musician extracted from hex SPC data translated into MIDI files. From there, the vintage instruments he introduced into a modern studio setting, integrating keyboard samples and added effects and mastering. The results are an interpretation of how the game scores for the Donkey Kong Country trilogy would have sounded if freed from the compression required by the Super Nintendo console's technical limitations.

The Donkey Kong Country trilogy is part of Nintendo Switch Online services's Super Nintendo game library. The 89-track digital compilation is streaming on Bandcamp. Musique Pour La Danse's vinyl releases ship from distributor PixelCrib in Australia.

Using hex SPC data crudely converted to MIDI, Jammin' Sam Miller painstakingly recreated DKC's soundtrack note by note, by finding the original equipment used to create it, translating the MIDI into a modern studio context, adding in keyboard samples, and re-mixing the sounds with added effects and mastering.
